Housing Debate - Leaving Legoland: Can we build the new homes we need?
Free event - Monday 18th June, 7pm

England faces significant housing challenges with the lowest level of completions in over 50 years, many first time buyers unable to afford deposits and mortgages, and lengthy housing waiting lists in many areas. Of those homes that are being built many are inappropriate homes that are often too small, unattractive and unpopular - identikit Legoland¹ estates that are poorly designed and are overly reliant on the car. We need more homes and we need better homes but can we afford both? With the desire to increase supply, do we have to sacrifice quality?

This debate will examine the future of housing in communities in England.

How will localism shape the look and feel of communities? How can we create a more sustainable housing market? Should we be exploring new delivery models for mass-market housing? And how can we best facilitate the self build revolution?

Do you have a view on the rush to get Britain building again and the type of homes we may need for the future? Come and join in the Legoland Debate.

Chaired by Harry Rich, Chief Executive, the RIBA
Speakers: Richard Lavington of Maccreanor Lavington Architects; Ian Poole, Manager of Planning Policy, St Edmundsbury; Andrew Whitaker, Planning Director of the Home Builders Federation; Iain Dunnett, Low Carbon Manager, Suffolk Chamber of Commerce; Stephen Hill, Director C2O Future Planners.
