Academy of Ancient Music: Musical Revolutions: Rise of the Concerto
Posted 20th February, 2012
Alina Ibragimova makes her AAM debut in a programme which vividly charts groundbreaking innovations in the role of the violin, from Biber’s Passacaglia (thought to be the first solo work for the instrument) to the summit of the baroque concerto. The programme also includes works by Bach and Vivaldi.
The juxtaposition of soloist and accompaniment has endless variations: Biber’s Passacaglia calls on the violinist to accompany herself; a playful dialogue ensues as JS Bach introduces a harpsichord; finally the stage bustles with action as JS Bach and Vivaldi explore the interaction between orchestra and soloist, full of harmony and conversation, contrast and opposition.
"These works aren't just the start of something. They form their own world, with the full spectrum of colour and emotion - everything that music is about, in fact" - Alina Ibragimova.
This concert is presented in association with Orchestras Live as part of Music Nation - a nationwide weekend of live music events across the UK. Devised and led by the BBC, the weekend is the first nationwide countdown event to the London 2012 Festival.
The Birth of the Concerto at Cambridge’s West Road Concert Hall has already sold out (as has the same concert in London’s Wigmore Hall), so advance booking is recommended.
The concert will start at approximately 7.30pm and ticket prices are £21 and £18.50 (with £19/£16.50 concessions), with a £5 ticket for those aged 25 years and under. Tickets are available from the apex Box Office on 01284 758000 or online at www.theapex.co.uk.
